High School: West Branch Major: Music Performance
Why did you choose to pursue music performance at Mount Union? Growing up I always had a strong passion for performing. Singing was simply my life. Every life aspiration that I had was deeply seeded in music. When I made the decision to attend and institution of higher learning I felt the only way I could be true to myself and have a successful and fulfilling future was by gaining a degree in music. So I made the decision to pursue a bachelor of arts in music with a concentration in performance.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? With a bachelor of arts in music, one has many opportunities for a career. There are many different career tracks to choose from including business, instructing/performing, and recording. From a business standpoint I would be able to do anything from artist representation to music journalism. In the performance field the varying careers range from entertainer to a musical coach. In dealing with the recording aspects one can do anything from producing to being a music editor. A degree like this leaves a lot of room for personal choices and being able to combine many of one's talents.
What activities are you involved in? I am involved in the Mount Union Concert Choir, Mu Phi Epsilon (an honorary music fraternity), Ohio Collegiate Music Educators Association, Alpha Psi Omega (honorary theatre fraternity), Social Chair for the Black Student Union, and I have participated two years in the Mount Union Fire Engine Choir.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? There are three things that I believe to be vital to someone who wants to pursue a music degree. those are the three P's; Patience, Passion, and Persistence. A music degree is not a degree that should be taken lightly. Talent can only take one so far. I have learned that you have to want it. you need to be hungry for it because there are times when you may hate it, but if you love it enough and you have the desire for it, you can achieve it. you have to have the persistence and the love for your craft to accomplish your goals.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? The advice that I would give to someone wanting to pursue a music degree, is advice I would give anyone wanting to pursue any degree, that is, Do what makes you happy. There are so many things that we are faced with in the world that complicate life already, when you are in college you have the chance to do what you want to do and shape your life however you may see fit. this is your chance to shine. be the person you want to be, choose a path that is going to bring you a life filled with happiness. don't be scared, it may get hard but if you love something enough you'll do it. Never let anyone tell you that you can't. Keep on pushing because it's all up to you.
