Major: Economics

Why did you choose to pursue your degree: I chose to get a degree in Economics because it worked well with my other major in business administration. With a lot of careers in business, you need to be able to understand the economy and how it works, and having an economics major allows me to grasp these concepts better and will allow me to contribute greater to my future employer.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? Having a degree in economics allows one to pursue many different types of careers. You can go into government work, financial work, and also into the business field. You have many options with this degree, and the careers that you can pursue are very open.

How will you use your degree upon graduation? I plan on getting a job in business administration and doing forecasting work for a corporation. Eventually, I would like to get my MBA, hopefully in the next five years.

What activities are you involved in?
I played soccer for my first two years at school, I am a member of the BEST program (bringing executives and students together), Alpha Chi Omega sorority and serve as the Vice President of GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol).

Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? You should like to work with numbers and be quick to pick up new concepts involving math. You need to be able to analyze graphs, algebraic equations and formulas and then compare them to real world situations.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? Do the reading and homework in all your classes or you will fall behind. If you don't understand a concept, get help right away. A lot of things that you do in economics build off of each other, and if you don't grasp the concept right away, it will cause you problems in the future because you will definitely see it again. Pursue internship opportunities to get real world experience, because there is only so much you can learn in the classroom and on-the-job experience is critical in order to succeed in the economics field.
