Major: Media Computing

Why did you choose to pursue media computing at Mount Union? I chose to major in Media Computing because it is an exciting field. It is one that is very new and always changing. Media Computing requires creative skills, vision, and technical skills. I am very interested in the electronic presentation of information and discovering new ways to present that information.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? Media Computing allows students to explore careers in many areas. Jobs such as a graphic designer, web master, web designer, animator, media editor, media content manager, digital photographer and digital sound production are just a few kinds of jobs graduates can pursue with a major in Media Computing.

How will you use your degree upon graduation? I plan to start my own company that handles web design, digital video and digital photography. I will also be pursing a degree in higher education and would some day like to teach at the college level.

What activities are you involved in? During my years at Mount Union, I have been involved with the Marching Band, ran the Mount Union by George television show, been a Community Educator for two years and a member of History and Political Science Club. I have also been a member of Kappa Kappa Psi national band honorary, Alpha Lambda Delta national freshman honorary, and Psi Kappa Omega all-college academic honor society.

Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? For a person to really succeed in Media Computing, they have to be very interested in the field. The person would need to be self motivated and willing to explore the mediums beyond what is done in the classroom. It is also important to be able to take constructive criticism and improve on the work that has already been done.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? To realize that this major is very project oriented. The emphasis on projects means that it is necessary to plan and pace yourself through each semester. It is important to go beyond the very minimum requirements to get the most out of this program. Also, find ways to use your area of concentration outside classroom projects so you can get as much experience as possible.
