Hiromi Takahashi
Hometown: Youngstown, OH
High School: Austintown- Fitch Major: Communications
Why did you choose to pursue communications at Mount Union? I chose to pursue a degree in communication studies and Japanese because it is the first step in my overall goal to become a professor and teach at an international university in Japan.
What types of careers are available for students who share your major? People who major in communication pursue a number of careers. Careers in fields such as research, education, mass communication, training and consulting, and human relations and management are open to communication majors.
How will you use your degree upon graduation? Upon graduating, I plan to pursue a master's degree in intercultural communication. And, if I receive the Fulbright Grant I will conduct research and study abroad in Japan. Which will, in turn, contribute to a master's thesis. Then, I will work towards a Ph.D. so that I may become a professor and teach at an international university in Japan.
What activities are you involved in? I am a member of the cross country and track teams. I just completed the application for the Fulbright Grant, and I promote studying abroad to students here at Mount.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? A person should care for people of all cultural backgrounds, respect (for yourself and others), amiable personality, diligence, patience, kindness and be goal-oriented.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? Just love what you do, work hard, set goals, do an internship and/or study abroad, try to combine your communication major with another area (i.e. a foreign language), enjoy people, and most of all have fun!
