Hometown: Northfield Center, OH

Major: Mathematics

Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
I am pursuing a degree in mathematics, because I have always had an interest in math since I first was taught about numbers. While my fellow classmates dreaded math, it was always my favorite subject.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?
When I tell people that I am majoring in mathematics the first thing they ask is “Are you going to teach math?” Although many students link their mathematics degree with teaching, there are other areas of work that one can focus on including research, data analysis, computer programming and engineering. A mathematics degree can be used in many different aspects.

How will you use your degree upon graduation?
I am planning on linking my mathematics major with a double minor in chemistry and business. I am considering becoming an actuary, which is a career that uses a statistical approach to manage risks for corporations.

In what activities are you involved?
I am an Emerging Leaders coordinator, a math learning assistant, a RaiderRobics instructor, a member of Alpha Delta Pi and Vice President of Alpha Lambda Delta.

Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major?
For someone to succeed, I think it is important to be patient. You may not understand the information the first time around and that is alright. You need to have patience and perseverance to work through some subjects. Also, you need to be interested in what you are learning.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
I would advise you to make sure you comprehend what you are learning and don't be afraid to ask for help. I would also recommend starting a study group with other students to gain a better understanding.
