Hometown: Warren/Howland, OH
Major: Middle Childhood Education
Minor: American Studies
Why did you choose to pursue your degree? Since I am a middle childhood education major with concentrations in language arts and social studies, I thought a minor in American Studies would enhance my knowledge. American Studies incorporates a variety of areas, such as history, political science, English, sociology, communications and religion. As a result, I feel I will be a more well-rounded candidate for a teacher position.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? Since this concentration incorporates several different areas of study, the jobs are also varied. Some include education (from elementary to college level), law, journalism, social work, medicine, government, business and museum curation.
How will you use your degree upon graduation? Initially, I hope to be a teacher in the middle level grades and later an administrator or guidance counselor.
What activities are you involved in? Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Alpha Lambda Delta honorary, Kappa Delta Pi education honorary, SNEA and a LS 100 student assistant.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? He/she should have a wide-range of academic interests, since American Studies classes do not just focus on history. Also, you should have a willingness to learn about the many assets of American culture.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? I think making continuous connections between the present and the past concerning American culture is crucial. Also, learn as much as you can because this degree can help in other areas of study.
