Department: Education

What type of interesting features do you incorporate into your classes?
I try to keep them guessing, so there are a lot of creative things that I do - lateral thinking problems, brainteasers, etc. Most of all, I try not to get trapped in a lecture format.

In your opinion, how is Mount Union College unique from other small liberal arts colleges?
I love it here. It's a friendly place with lots of amiability. Professors interact with students in all sorts of ways outside of the classroom.

How do Mount Union students benefit from attending a small school as opposed to a larger school?
We’re not a factory or a place where you have 300 students in a lecture hall.

Have you done any interesting research or developed any interesting courses at Mount Union?
I've done recent research on character education and ways that we could borrow from eastern philosophy. Probably the most unique course that I teach includes a trip to Charleston, SC where we teach in inner-city middle schools.

What kinds of opportunities do Mount Union students have after graduating from College?
They do all kinds of things in teaching. We place students in the public schools, but have had students teach internationally - one student taught on a cruise ship for a year before starting a teaching career in Florida.

In what activities do you participate in your spare time?
I swim, read, play with my grandkids and fiddle in my Zen garden.
