Major: International Studies

Why did you choose to pursue international studies at Mount Union? I have always been interested in politics and international relations. I watched world news everyday with my father since I was in middle school in Vietnam. However, I did not decide to major in international relations until I participated in the Model UN club and went to conferences. I found great interests in the process of preparing for and participating in the Model UN conferences. I wanted to learn more about this field.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? There are so many things you can do with international relations. You can work for the U.S Foreign Service (as a diplomat to other countries, a delegate to the United Nations, etc...) if you are an American citizen. You can also work for non-governmental organizations or United Nations organizations or as a consultant to multi-national corporations.

How will you use your degree upon graduation? My ultimate goal is to use the knowledge and experience I learned from this major to help develop more projects and cooperation between Vietnam and international organizations. I also wish to help bring more accurately positive images of my country to the world.

What activities are you involved in? I was with the Model UN for five semesters and took on some leadership positions including president and head delegate. I attended several conferences with the club including the All-American Conference in Chicago and National Leadership and Model UN Summits in New York City. I'm also involved with the Association of International Students, Student Senate, the Dynamo, WRMU and a student representative to the faculty sub-committee on International Education Committee for Spring 2006 semester.

Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? Keep an open mind and open heart to study different cultures and ideologies. You should be willing to learn and accept different points of view while training yourself to think critically. Also, you must have a positive attitude, be hard-working and accepting to new challenges.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? Learn another or more than one language and seize any chance you have to travel outside the United States.
