Information on Graduation Requirements

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Effective January, 2003, Mount Union College will confer degrees at two times. For all students who complete their graduation requirements during or at the end of the Spring semester, the degree will be conferred at the May Commencement. For those who complete their degree after the previous year's Commencement and by the end of the Fall semester, the degree will be conferred in January. The diplomas will be mailed to the students at that time. There will be no Commencement ceremony; however, students receiving their degree in January may participate in the May Commencement exercises. Students who complete their work before the end of the Fall semester will receive a letter of completion prior to the awarding of their degree in January.

Let Me Tell You About Graduation

Even though most students attending an institution of higher education have as one of their goals, Graduation, many students are unaware of what all is involved in this process. First of all, a student must apply for graduation to even get the process started. When the Registration Office gets the application it then processes a Degree Clearance Form on which will be listed all remaining requirements that the student must meet in order to be eligible to graduate. A copy of this completed form is returned to the student. The student does not automatically graduate even after completing all his/her remaining requirements. The student must let the College know when he/she wishes to graduate and the Faculty must vote to approve the conferal of a degree on this student. After this, the college may confer a degree. The ceremony at which this conferring takes place is called Commencement, however a degree may be conferred without a formal Commencement ceremony. The following sections will provide most of the information needed by potential graduates from Mount Union College.

When Should You Apply For Graduation?

You should apply for graduation if you have successfully completed 60 or more hours of courses. This will help ensure that the Registration Office will be able to process and then give you a completed Degree Clearance Form at least a year before you plan to graduate. The Degree Clearance Form will indicate what major, minor, and general education requirements you still need to complete to be eligible to graduate. Knowing these requirements at least two semesters before graduation helps avoid "last minute graduation shortages." You must apply at least one semester before you plan to graduate.

Applications are available in the Registration Office and a copy may be found at the bottom of this webpage.

Please complete all parts of the "Application" with particular attention to when you expect to complete requirement for your degree. Remember, assuming completion of all requirements, you decide when you wish to graduate. Please also make certain that your major(s), minor(s) and concentration(s) are correct on this form, particularly if your academic information is not up-to-date in the College's computer records.

If circumstances require that you change the expected date of your degree completion, notify the Registration Office immediately.

If any change is made in your expected major(s) or minor(s), or if any waivers are made to your graduation requirements by your department, notify the Registration Office immediately and make certain that there is writen evidence in your file of the change(s).

NOTE: Once you graduate your undergraduate record ends. You MAY NOT add a major, a minor, or a concentration or alter your undergraduate record after that point in time. This applies to any term in which you may enroll before your degree is conferred but after you have said that you wish to be considered finished with your undergraduate program. It is possible for you to earn a second degree. The requirements for such a degree are stated each year in the College Catalogue.

Some Things For You to Note

All communications regarding degree completion will be directed to your address and/or telephone number as listed in the Registrar's official files--the campus location will be contacted first, then the home. Please notify the Registration Office as soon as possible if is a change to either your campus or home address.

If you complete requirements prior to the January degree conferral or the spring Commencement, you may secure from the Registration Office a letter of completion as soon as your requirements are completed.

It is not necessary to order a cap and gown. In April you will receive instructions as to when you may pick up a cap and gown at the Campus Bookstore.

Guest tickets for the commencement ceremony will be made available through the Alumni Office. Ticket information will be issued by that office approximately four to six weeks prior to commencement.

Every effort will be make to pronounce your name correctly during the commencement ceremony. If your name is pronounced differently from the way one would assume from its spelling, please provide a phoneticallay marked interpretive key on a separate sheet of paper and return it with the Degree Application Form.

If you have an outstanding financial obligation to the college you may not:
1. participate in any aspect of the Baccalaureate or Commencement exercises;
2. receive a diploma or any other attendant documents;
3. secure any evidence or verification of degree conferral.
