Mount Union's women's volleyball team (4-0) opened the 2007 season by going undefeated and winning the Purple Raider Invitational held in the Timken Gymnasium on August 31 & September 1.
The Purple Raiders were led by Melissa Mahnke, who tolated 35 kills, Amanda Kohler, who finished with 33 kills and 39 digs, Katie Kmieck, who had 76 assists and 27 digs, Sarah Parker, who totaled 30 kills, Kalie Rock, who finished with 35 digs. The Raiders had pool play wins over Case Western (3-0), Westminster (3-0) and Denison (3-0). In the championship match, the Purple & White defeated Adrian (3-0).
“This opening weekend at home was a great opportunity for our team to showcase their hard work from the summer and as well as their dedication throughout preseason," said Head Coach Leigh Ann Matesich. "I know we were all excited to start competing. As for the tournament, I think we developed more confidence and comfort on the floor with each other as we progressed through each match. Once we got the opening weekend jitters out of our system our squad put together a solid offensive and defensive effort against a talented and athletic Adrian team.”
Mount Union was a perfect 12-0 in games played over the weekend. The Raiders placed three on the All-Tournament Team - Mahnke, Kohler & Parker
