Why did you choose to pursue your degree? I studied Japanese in high school, and have always wanted to be a teacher. Coming to Mount, one of the only small schools to offer Japanese education, was almost a no-brainer.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? Anything that requires knowledge of a foreign culture really, but jobs specific to Japanese would be teaching English in Japan, working for a Japanese company, teaching Japanese in the US or internationally. I know I've asked myself "What can I do with a Japanese major?" but there are really a lot of options.
How will you use your degree upon graduation? I plan on teaching English in Japan for 2 or 3 years after graduation and then teaching Japanese in the US, most likely at the high school level.

Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? Interest and curiosity in Japanese culture is the main requirement. Strong work ethic and study habits are also necessary because Japanese is completely different than the romance languages. It requires a lot more time dedicated to studying. Also, an interest in studying abroad, meeting new people, and being comfortable with making mistakes are important. Most people think that because Japanese uses calligraphy based characters that you need artistic ability to succeed. That is definitely not true! I would have dropped it a long time ago if that were the case.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? Don't give up! I won't lie, Japanese is challenging, but it is not impossible. Also, use it as much as possible! There are Japanese students everywhere on campus, and they love having someone that is not from Japan to speak Japanese with. Study often, but don't study to the point where you hate the language or where it is not fun anymore.
