Hometown: Highland Heights, OH
Major: Sociology
Why did you choose to pursue your degree? I am majoring in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice because it has always been an interest of mine. Growing up, I enjoyed reading mystery novels which sparked my interest. Television shows highlighting the legal aspect and various shadowing opportunities also guided me. I enjoy my classes, which makes it easier for me to get into the material.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? A sociology degree can help students find jobs in a variety of sectors. Specifically, the criminal justice concentration aims to prepare students for careers dealing with criminal justice, as well as legal professions, criminology, justice and law and a variety of others.
How will you use your degree upon graduation? Upon graduation I plan on attending graduate school for either law or criminal justice studies. I hope to work as a criminal investigator for a criminal agency, like the FBI, or as a criminal defense attorney.
In what activities are you involved? Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Sophomore Service and Emerging Leaders.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? Majors should have an interest in studying people and should be inquisitive and logical.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? Try it out and see if you like it. Sociology is a huge field, so there is probably something there that will catch your eye. Even if you decide not to major in sociology, many topics in sociology have applications in other areas such as education or business.
