Major: Religious Studies

Why did you choose to pursue your degree? I chose to pursue a major in religious studies because I think it is the most important aspect of my life and I find it interesting to learn about different religions.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major? A lot of people think that all you can do with a religious studies degree is go into the ministry, but that statement is completely false. Other options include becoming a counselor, a social worker, working for a non-profit organization or participating in a graduate program.

How will you use your degree upon graduation? I plan on using my degree either to go on to graduate school or work for a non-profit organization.

In what activities are you involved? I'm involved in Campus Crusade for Christ, After Hours executive board and Sophomore Service

Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major? I think it is very important to have patience and an open mind. Your beliefs will be challenged, but that does not mean you have to give them up. It is important to be able to see other people's view in order to strengthen your own. You will come away from many classes with a new outlook on certain aspects of religion that you may have never thought of before.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you? Be willing to ask questions about your own beliefs. Without questioning there can be no growth. At the same time, stand firm in what you see as your core beliefs. Questioning should strengthen your faith, not make it come crashing down. If you are willing to ask questions and have an open mind you will gain so much more than just knowledge from your religion classes. You will have a new understanding on some of the hardest issues you'll face throughout your life.
