Purple Raiders Fall At Ohio Northern

Mount Union College's women's basketball team (12-9, 7-7 OAC) lost to Ohio Northern (12-9, 7-7 OAC) by a score of 55-44 on Saturday, February 4 in Ada, Ohio.

The Purple Raiders led for most of the first half, including a seven-point advantage when forward Ashley Ross posted a layup at the 16:13 mark to put the score at 9-2. The Polar Bears fought back to claim a 13-12 lead after guard Jenny Markle drained a three pointer with 5:34 remaining. Mount Union trailed 25-21 at halftime.

In the second stanza, Ohio Northern quickly built their lead to nine after Markle hit her second trey of the contest to make it 34-25 at the 15:12 mark. The Raiders pulled to within one point of the Polar Bears' 42-41 lead with 5:31 remaining thanks to a layup from Ross, but Ohio Northern answered with a three-point bucket from guard Emily Culberston that pushed the score to 45-41 with just over five minutes left in the game. Ohio Northern would hold on to earn the 55-44 victory, their twelfth win of the season.

The Raiders were led individually by Ross's 13 points and nine rebounds. Center Alicia Williams (12 points) and guard Kyla Hogan (11 points) were also in double figures in scoring.

For the Polar Bears, guard Jenny Markle posted a game-high 18 points and was 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Mount Union shot .300 from the field compared to .450 for the Ohio Northern and was out-rebounded 37-30.

The Purple Raiders will return home to face conference rival Baldwin-Wallace on Wednesday, February 8, at the Timken Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
