Lady Raiders Take Two From Gators

Mount Union College's softball team (13-2, 2-0 OAC) swept a home doubleheader against visiting Allegheny (4-8) on Wednesday, March 30. The Purple Raiders posted a 1-0 win in game #1 followed by 8-0 win in the night cap. In game #1, Amy Polomsky broke a scoreless sixth inning tie with a RBI double to plate the lone run of the contest. Jen Phoenix scored on the Polomsky double after pinch running for Katie Olive, who led off the inning with a single. Offensively, Polomsky led the Raiders going 3-for-3 while Ashley Hochstetler, Crystal Thomas, Olive, and Amanda Yackmack each had hits for the Raiders. Ashley Hochstetler (4-0) pitched the first 6 1/3 innings allowing no runs while striking out three. The Gators loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning before Lindsey Royer relieved Hochstetler and struck out the next two batters to earn her first save. Giannina Coccaro took the loss for Allegheny. In game #2, starting pitcher Ashley Ault went the distance for the Raiders, allowing just two hits and striking out three. With the win, Ault improves her season record to 2-1. Lauren Weichel took the loss for the Gators. After leading 1-0 for the first three innings, the Raiders broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. In the inning, Carissa Prince knocked home two runs with a single followed by RBI singles from Jen Phoenix, Cortney Frederick, and Crystal Thomas. Prince went 2-for-3 in the game. Mount Union also received multiple hit performances from Erin Duignan, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Andrea Fertgus who was 2-for-3. Phoenix and Duignan each scored two runs in the contest. Mount Union will next travel to Westminster on Thursday, March 31 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. |
