Raiders Fall In Overtime To Pitt-Greensburg

Mount Union College’s men’s basketball team (3-9) was defeated by Pitt-Greensburg (4-7), by a score of 75-67 in overtime on Saturday, January 5 in Greensburg, PA.

The Raiders went on an early 10-0 run to take a 17-9 lead when freshman/wing David Pellerite converted a lay-up with 12:31 left in the first half. The Bobcats regained the lead at the 7:43 mark, answering with a 14-0 run, capped by a lay-up by Jacquet Wells to take the lead at 23-17. Pitt-Greensburg extended its lead and took an eight point advantage into halftime at 38-30.

The Bobcats held the lead until 4:08 left in the second half when a lay-up by junior/forward Jay Mathis vaulted the Purple and White into the lead at 58-56. The Raiders didn’t trail the rest of the second half, but the Bobcats were able to tie up the score at 66-66 on a three pointer by Ed Montgomery with :07 seconds remaining in the contest, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra five minute period, the Raiders began with a free throw by Sam King to give Mount Union a 67-66 advantage with 4:27 left in the period, but the Bobcats finished the game on a 9-0 run to earn the 75-67 victory, outscoring the Raiders 9-1 in overtime.

Individually, the Raiders were led by junior/guard Chris Switzer with a game-high 23 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore/guard Sam King chipped in with a game-high seven assists. Pitt-Greensburg was led by Montgomery with a team-high 17 points, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, and Daniel Waajid with a game-best 16 rebounds.

Mount Union shot .414 from the field compared to .448 for Pitt-Greensburg. The Bobcats held a 41-36 rebounding edge while committing 28 turnovers compared to 30 by the Raiders.

The Purple and White next travel to Capital on Wednesday, January 9. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
