Raiders Defeated By Blue Streaks

Mount Union men's basketball team (2-6, 0-4 OAC) fell to John Carroll (4-4, 2-2 OAC), by a score of 93-84 on Wednesday, December 19 at the Timken Gymnasium in Alliance, Ohio.

Mount Union opened the game on an 18-5 run capped by a lay-up from sophomore/point guard Sam King at the 13:46 mark. The Blue Streaks responded and took their first lead of the contest, at 27-25, when Jason Thompson capped a 22-8 run on a dunk with 7:58 remaining in the first half.

The Purple and White then went on a quick 6-0 run capped by a lay-up from junior/forward Jay Mathis, making the score 31-27 with 6:22 remaining before the break. John Carroll out-scored the Raiders 16-6 the rest of the first half to take a 43-37 lead into the locker room.

A lay-up from sophomore/forward Chris Crawford allowed Mount Union to tie the game at 54-54 at the 13:54 mark of the second half.

John Carroll extended its lead to 68-61, when Donte Ledwell buried a three-pointer with 9:49 remaining. Mount Union was never able to re-gain the lead as the visiting Blue Streaks secured the 93-84 victory.

Individually, the Raiders were paced by King's 25 points and seven assists. Crawford added 12 points a team-high four rebounds. John Carroll was led by Terry Walsh, who recorded a triple-double by tallying 27 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. Maurice Haynes and Derek Smith contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Mount Union shot .537 from the field compared to .608 for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks held a 40-22 rebounding edge but committed 22 turnovers to 11 for Mount.

The Purple and White will next play their re-scheduled game vs. Otterbein on Saturday, December 22. Tip-off from Westerville is set for 2:30 p.m.
