Raider Women's Basketball Team Loses To John Carroll

Mount Union College’s women’s basketball team (5-7, 2-3 OAC) fell to John Carroll (6-5, 1-3 OAC), by a score of 67-62 on Saturday, January 5 in University Heights, Ohio.

The Raiders jumped out to an early 14-6 lead when junior/forward Steph Schwartz made a lay up at the 10:27 mark. John Carroll tied up the score and took the lead at 22-20 on a jumper by Lianna Jennings with 3:41 remaining in the first half. The Blue Streaks took a 32-24 advantage into halftime.

John Carroll took the biggest lead of the game at 12 when Erin Zahariev made a lay-up to make the score 36-24 at the 18:27 mark. The Raiders regained the lead with 8:51 remaining in the period when sophomore/guard Tessa Pohovey connected on a three pointer, making the score 48-47 Raiders.

The lead changed three times until John Carroll took the lead at the 4:49 mark with a 55-53 advantage. The Raiders came within two at 64-62 when Ellie Geiger made a lay-up with :25 seconds remaining in the contest, but the Streaks held on for the 67-62 victory.

Individually, Mount Union had two players record double-doubles as senior/center Alicia Williams recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds, and senior/forward Ashley Ross had 10 points and 12 boards. John Carroll was led by Jennings’ game-high 18 points.

The Raiders shot .328 from the field compared to .333 for the Streaks. Mount Union held a 59-41 rebounding advantage and committed 17 turnovers compared to just eight by John Carroll.

The Purple and White will next host Capital on Wednesday, January 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
