Purple Raiders Split Doubleheader with Yellow Jackets

Mount Union College's baseball team (7-8-1, 1-1 OAC) opened conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Baldwin-Wallace (6-4, 1-1 OAC) on Wednesday, March 30 at 23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio. The Purple Raiders erased a four run, seventh inning deficit to win game #1, 6-5. The Yellow-Jackets won the nightcap, 8-6, in extra innings.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the 5th inning, Baldwin-Wallace left fielder Mike Farrell drove a three-run triple into the left field alley to give the Jackets a 4-1 advantage. Trailing 5-1 in the final inning, Mount Union third baseman Chris Liptak belted a three-run homer to draw the Raiders to within one, at 5-4. After loading the bases, catcher Mike Chuppa and shortstop Tyson Ware hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Raiders a 6-5 victory.

Raider pitcher Nic Carucci (2-0) earned the victory pitching three shutout innings in relief for the Purple & White. Ware led the Raider offense going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Trailing 6-1 in game #2, Mount Union once again rallied in the seventh inning to tie the score, at 6-6, when Liptak lined a two-run single through the left side. Baldwin-Wallace responded by scoring two runs in the eighth inning to earn an 8-6 victory.

Adam Fantone (0-1) took the loss for Mount Union while striking out four over 1.1 innings. Offensively, the Raiders were led by second baseman Derek Ball who went 3-for-3 with one RBI.

The Raiders next play a doubleheader at Ohio Northern on Saturday, April 2. First pitch from Ada, Ohio is scheduled for 1 p.m.
