Mount Union College senior/midfielder Steve Gillespie (Brecksville/Broadview Heights) and junior/defender Matt Parnell (Uniontown/Green) were selected to the 2007 Men’s Soccer All-Ohio Athletic Conference Team, announced the conference office on Tuesday, November 13. Gillespie also earned the distinction of being named the OAC Midfielder-of-the-Year - only the second time a Purple Raider earned the award (Paul Pendy, 2003).
Gillespie, who earned 2007 First-Team All-OAC honors, is a media computing major carrying a 3.46 grade point average. In 2007, Gillespie, a four-year letter winner and captain, played in all 17 games for the Raiders and had a team-best 16 points (5g/6a).
"Steve (Gillespie) is clearly one of the top players in the region," noted Raider Head Coach John Witkowski. "He played with a broken arm for much of the season and still led us in goals and assists. He is also a phenomenal student and an excellent team leader. I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to coach such a fine young man this fall. He epitomizes what a Division III student-athlete is all about."
Parnell, a sport management major with a 3.70 grade point average, earned 2007 Honorable-Mention All-OAC honors. He is a three-year letter winner, who started 15 games for the Raiders this fall.
"Matt (Parnell) is extremely athletic and one of the best one-on-one defenders in the area," added Witkowski. "He is physically strong, he read the game extremely well and has an terrific soccer IQ. Matt (Parnell) is also one of the leaders on our team. We will be leaning on him heavily in the off-season and next year, to continue to lead both on and off the field of play."
