Purple Raider Men's Basketball Team Splits Pair at Wooster Tournament

Mount Union College's men's basketball team (3-8) finished 1-1 at the Wooster Tournament after a 77-66 win over Wesley (6-4) on Saturday evening, December 29 at the Timken Gymnasium on the campus of The College of Wooster. The Raiders fell 76-53 on Friday.
After a back-and-forth first half, which saw the lead change sides seven times, Mount Union pulled away in the second.
With a 33-32 lead at the intermission, the Purple Raiders opened the second half on a 23-4 run capped by a Chris Switzer jumper with 12:46 to go and a 56-36 lead. Mount Union never looked back.
Individually, the Raiders were paced by Switzer's 19 points. Jay Mathis added his second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while David Pellerite added18 points, Chris Crawford had 12 points and Sam King chipped in with 10 assists. Wesley was led by Rashawn Johnson who had a game-high 27 points in the losing effort.
As a team, Mount Union shot .549 from the field compared to .436 for Wesley. The Raiders also held a 36-28 rebounding advantage.
Mount Union will next travel to Pitt-Greensburg (PA) on Saturday, January 5 beginning at 3 p.m.

Mount Union men's basketball team (2-8) fell to Notre Dame College (5-9), by a score of 76-53 on Friday, December 28.
The Purple and White jumped out to an early 13-6 lead when freshman/wing Dave Reichlin nailed a three-pointer at the 12:41 mark. Notre Dame responded and eventually took a 24-22 lead on a Keith Bowden lay-up with 6:33 remaining before the break.
The Falcons settled for a 34-29 halftime lead.
Notre Dame used a 20-5 run over a seven minute span in the second half, capped by a lay-up from Karim McFarlane, to extend their lead to 72-48. The Raiders were never able to gain any momentum the rest of the way as they suffered a 76-53 defeat.
Individually, Mount was paced by junior/guard Chris Switzer's 16 points. Sophomore/post Chris Crawford had 11 points, while junior/forward Jay Mathis added 11 points and 10 boards. The Falcons were led by Jerome Pierce, who tallied 24 points. McFarlane added 20 points and six rebounds while Bowden recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 caroms.
The Raiders shot .352 from the field compared to .509 for the Falcons. Mount Union held a 35-35 rebounding advantage and committed 18 turnovers to Notre Dame's 10.
The Purple and White will play tomorrow, December 29, in the consolation game of the tournament against the loser of Wesley and The College of Wooster. Tip-off is currently set for 5:30 p.m.
