Mount Union Women's Basketball Earns Split At Cruzin Classic

Mount Union women's basketball team (5-5, 2-2 OAC) was defeated by Millikin University (7-3), by a score of 58-49 in overtime of the opening game at the Cruzin Classic held at Barry University (FL) on Tuesday, December 18. Mount Union then won their second game of the Classic by defeating Wisconsin Osh-Kosh (5-6) by a score of 46-39 on Thursday, December 20.
The Raiders began the contest on a 9-3 run capped by a three-pointer from freshman/guard Katie Crider at the 13:26 mark. Osh-Kosh responded with a 14-4 run to take a 17-13 lead at the 5:24 mark on a Tiffany Pugh three-pointer.
A jumper from sophomore/wing Tessa Pohovey with 17 seconds remaining before the break gave the Raiders a slim 21-20 lead heading into halftime.
The Purple and White opened the second half on a 9-2 run finished by another triple from Crider at the 13:47 mark. Osh-Kosh regained the lead, at 38-36, when Michelle Boeder connected on a three-pointer with 6:19 left to play.
Raider senior/forward Ashley Ross then buried a jumper with 4:39 showing on the clock to take a 40-39 lead. Mount would not look, outscoring the Titans 6-0 in the final four minutes of play to secure a 46-39 victory.
Individually, Mount Union was led by senior/center Alicia Williams, who totaled 18 points and nine rebounds. Pohovey and Crider each contributed nine points. Osh-Kosh was paced by Pugh's 14 points.
The Raiders shot .353 from the field while the Titans shot .326. Mount held a 37-27 rebounding advantage and turning the ball over 12 times compared to 16 for Osh-Kosh.
The Purple and White next travel to to Pennsylvania to play Westminster on Saturday, December 29. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.

Mount Union vs. Millikin (IL)
The Raiders took an early 12-5 lead on a lay-up from senior/forward Ashley Ross at the 11:33 mark. Millikin responded by going on a 12-0 run capped by a lay-up form Lindsay Ippel, making the score 17-12.
The Big Blue would eventually take a 24-18 lead into intermission.
Another lay-up from Ippel at the beginning of the second half helped Millikin extend the lead to 28-18 at the 18:24 mark. The Purple and White then brought the deficit to one, at 31-30, when sophomore/guard Tiff Oster nailed a three-pointer with 10:51 remaining in the second half.
Another triple from Oster at the 7:19 mark allowed the Raiders to take a 38-37 lead and hold their first advantage since the 5:14 mark of the first stanza.
Both teams traded buckets until the last minute of the game, where the Purple and White were found holding a 4 point lead with 27 seconds left. However, a three-pointer and a free throw from Millikin's Kayla Pembrook in the final two poesessions of the game forced a 47-47 tie and the game to head into overtime.
In the overtime period, Mount Union took a quick 49-47 lead when sophomore/wing Tessa Pohovey nailed a jumper with 4:23 on the clock. However, the Big Blue would finish the game on an 11-0 run to earn a 58-49 victory.
Individually, the Raiders were paced by Pohovey's 11 points. Millikin was led by Ippel's game-high 33 point effort.
Mount Union shot .328 from the field compared to .33 for Millikin. The Purple and White held a 19-16 rebounding edge but committed 22 turnovers to Millikin's 18.
