Mount Union's Men's Team and Baldwin-Wallace's Women's Team Claim 2005 OAC Track and Field Championships

The 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships featured Mount Union College's men’s team (175 points) earning it’s 24th conference championship and Baldwin-Wallace College's women’s team (165 points) winning the OAC title for the 15th time in the 22 year history of the women’s championships, as hosted by Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7.
The women’s triple jump opened the final day’s excitement as Wilmington sophomore Doreen Nagawa broke her own OAC championship record with a winning jump of 39-11.25. Baldwin-Wallace freshman Megan Carthcart won the high jump with a height of 5-05.25. Muskingum senior Jamie Eastham earned the individual title in the shot put with a distance of 45-04.25.
The afternoon events included the finals of all the remaining running events. John Carroll senior Shannon McConville earned three victories on the day, including the 1,500 meter run (4:44.30), 800 meter run (2:20.07), and 5,000 meter run (17:58). Other individual champions day included sophomore Kelli Periano of Otterbein in the 100 meter hurdles (14.86), sophomore Mary Griglak of Baldwin-Wallace in the 400 meter dash (58.90), sophomore Betse Johnson of Wilmington in the 100 meter dash (12.44), sophomore Lauren Ernst of Ohio Northern in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.11), senior Emily Leamman of Capital in the 200 meter dash (25.37), junior Ellie Fernandez of John Carroll in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:14), Baldwin-Wallace’s 4x100 meter relay team (48.47), and Ohio Northern’s 3,200 meter relay squad (21.47).
On the men’s side, Capital junior Bobby Jones produced a jump of 47-04.25 to earn his second consecutive OAC triple jump title, adding on to his long jump title he earned on Friday. Freshman Chris Sprowl of Wilmington won the high jump with a height of 6-07. The shot put featured Mount Union taking the top three spots - sophomore Justin Archer coming in first (52-00.50), followed by freshman Dan Gund (51-02.25), and sophomore Justin Rodhe (51-02).
Finals for the running events featured Mount Union junior Johnny Biacofsky earning individual titles in the 100 meter dash with an OAC championship meet record of 10.45, and in the 200 meter dash (21.47). Biacofsky also anchored Mount Union’s first place 4x100 meter relay team (41.52).
Other individual champions included Mount Union senior Matt Cole in the 110 hurdles (14.53), freshman Marque Jones of Wilmington in the 400 meter dash (48.65), sophomore Ryan Garro of Mount Union in the 800 meter run (1:53.31), sophomore Jeremy Velliquette of Mount Union in the 1,500 meter run (3:59.68), senior Chad Nuesmeyer of Muskingun in the 400 hurdles (54.24), junior Brad Schroeder of Ohio Northern in the 5,000 meter run (15:22), senior Greg Zumberger of Heidleberg in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:45), and Wilmington’s 1600 meter relay team (3:18.21).
The Jim Wuske Award given the to the top Men's Track Athlete of the Year was awarded to Mount Union's Johnny Biacosfky, while Capital's Bobby Jones earned the Sparky Adams Most Outstanding Field Event Athlete Award.
The Marcia French Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete Award went to John Carroll's Shannon McConville and the Most Outstanding Field Event Athlete Award was awarded to Muskingum's Jamie Eastham.
Mount Union's John Homon was named the 2005 OAC's Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year while Bill Taraschke of Baldwin-Wallace was named the 2005 OAC Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year.
Day #1 Highlights
Friday’s festivities opened with an OAC championship meet record as Otterbein sophomore Alysha Gossel won the women’s pole vault with a height of 11’09.0, breaking the mark of 11’03.0 set by Ohio Northern’s Jackie Kaup in 2002. Mount Union’s freshman Brittany Morr took second (10’08.0).
In the women’s javelin, Otterbein sophomore Krysta Douds took top honors (125-11) while Mount Union senior Susan Pilarski placed second (125-03). Baldwin-Wallace's Kara Weaver won the long jump (19:01.25) while teammate Jamie Luketic took first (39:14) in the 10,000 meter run.
John Carroll won the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:27.82 while Mount Union placed second (9:35.13).
On the men’s side, Mount Union sophomore Shannon Bennington set a school record in the pole vault (16-07.25) earning second place. Otterbein senior Chris Swanson earned first place with an OAC championship meet record jump of 17-02.
Baldwin-Wallace senior Jon Shoffstall won the discus (159-03) as Mount Union’s Jamie Simpson finished second with a throw of 157-01. In the men’s long jump, Wilmington freshman Marque Jones won with a jump of 23-03.50. Winning the javelin was Baldwin-Wallace freshman Jim Roy (200-05).
John Carroll took honors in the 4x800 relay with a time of 7:45.90 as Mount Union placed second (7:51.87). Otterbein's Mike Sawicki and Nate Ritz took first and second respectively in the 10,000 meter run with times of 31:59 and 32:02.
The Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place from May 26-28 held at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
