Introduction To The Honors Program
The Honors Program provides academic flexibility and challenge for the superior student who desires to move at a faster pace, work more in depth, or work more independently than would be usual in a regular course. Its aim is to encourage intellectual curiosity, initiative, creativity, and a high standard of performance.
Three honors tracks are available: First Year in Honors, Honors in Liberal Studies, and Honors in a Major. A qualified student may participate in more than one track, and may discontinue honors study without penalty.
Students can use the Honors Program to increase the depth and breadth of their course of study, researching topics of their choice with the guidance of their favorite professor.
In addition to the academic challenge, participation in the Honors Program offers other advantages. Employers and graduate schools often consider students who take part in an Honors Program to be more motivated and able to take on more responsibility. This outlook upon honors students can increase employment opportunities and enhance graduate school admission chances.
Special recognition at commencement is given to students who graduate with honors, and official notation of honors is printed on the transcript of grades sent to potential employers and graduate schools.
